After graduation, I am looking for a job that will allow me to work more closely with students in a more positive way. In my current position in conduct, I often see students at their worst. That is why I am looking for a job that will give me more positive interactions with students. I am looking for a position that will give me more opportunities to create long-term mentoring relationships with students. Ideally, my first job will give me the ability to gain supervisory and crisis management skills. I am particularly interested in working in residential life because it would allow me to supervise a residential student leadership staff and allow me to grow in other competency areas.
In 3-10 years, I would like to be working more closely with students of color. I would want to transition to a position in admissions or scholarships. In admissions, I would want to have a diversity recruitment position. I would be recruiting students of color to campus. As an undergraduate I was able to help recruit students of color to Indiana University through the Multicultural Outreach Recruitment Educators and that made me to want to pursue a career in student affairs. I would like to create a similar program in the office of admissions I would be working in. This would allow me to continue supporting current undergraduates and help the campus become more diverse.
Working with the Groups Scholars Program has been the highlight of my student affairs experiences. If I am not able to work in diversity recruitment through admissions, I would like to work for a scholarship program that supports students of color as Groups does. When I was an undergraduate, I was in a similar scholarship program for students of color. The scholarship program I was in offered advising, programming and support all in an effort to retain their students. I would like the opportunity to help in the retention of students of color by working with a scholarship program that supports students of color.
In 10 plus years, I want to be working in multicultural affairs. I want to work with other departments on campus and help them better support our students of color by facilitating trainings and educational programs for those departments. I would also like to be able to develop campus-wide strategies on how to create environments that are more inclusive.
